Marcos Ambrose welcomes daughter and misses race

NASCAR driver Marcos Ambrose recently decided to skip his Nextel Cup debut and instead, welcomed home a baby girl. Marcos' wife, Sonja, gave birth Sunday afternoon to Adelaide Elizabeth.

(c) marcosambrose.com

Why Adelaide? Marcos is a proud member of Team Australia and we can only assume he and his wife took into account the city of Adelaide, Australia when naming the new baby girl. Adelaide, growing in popularity, means "noble type" and is fittingly paired with Elizabeth, born by the Queen of England (who, incidentally, rules over Australia as well). A very regal name for the newborn. Congratulations to the Ambrose family.

It's a girl! Samantha Harris gives birth

Samantha Harris, co-host of Dancing with the Stars, gave birth to a baby girl Sunday in Los Angeles. Samantha and her husband, Michael Hess, named their daughter Josselyn Sydney Hess.

(c) samantha-harris.com

What does the name chosen by Hess and Harris mean? Josselyn, a creative spelling of the name Jocelyn, was a French surname "Joscelin." Sydney, as well as being a place name (Sydney, Australia), comes from the male name Sidney, which is reported to mean "wide island." Combined they make for an interesting choice.

Charlotte Church is first time mother!

Singer Charlotte Church and her boyfriend, Gavin Henson, have welcomed their first child. It's a girl: Ruby Megan Henson weighing in at 6 lb 12 oz.

(c) CharlotteChurch.com

So what does Charlotte's baby's name mean? Ruby is simple enough: it's an English word used to describe a color and a gemstone (also the birthstone of children born in the month of July). Megan, popular in the 80s in the United States, is a Welsh pet form of Margaret, which means "pearl." Pearl is also, by chance, the birthstone for children born in the month of June. Overall, the child's name sure is "precious."

It's a girl for the Oswalt team

Yet another celebrity birth to report for Tuesday, September 18. Houston Astros' pitcher Roy Oswalt and his wife, Nicole, welcomed their second daughter into the world. Ainslee Grace joins big sister Arlee Faith.

(c) ESPN

What does the little girl's name mean? Ainslee, a variant of the Scottish surname Ainslie, is reported to me "Anne's field." Grace is ... well, that's a bit obvious don't you think? So what will they name a third daughter? I think we can expect to see another "A" first name that ends in -ee, as well as a virtue middle name. For example: Aylee Hope. What do you think?

(c) People

What does the little one's name mean? Valentina comes from the Latin valens which means "strong and healthy." Paloma, a very Spanish name, means either "dove" or "pigeon." We think she chose a wonderful name which is exactly what the mother was aiming for: strong and romantic. Congratulations, Salma.

Born: Wyatt James Barmes

According to the official Colorado Rockies website, shortstop Clint Barmes and his wife, Summer, welcomed their first child into the world on the 18th. The slightly premature baby boy was named Wyatt James.

(c) ESPN

So what does his name mean? Wyatt is a very rustic, "cowboy" name and, fittingly, means "brave in war." It is paired with James, a very common middle name that means "supplanter." Wonder if it's after family at all?

Salomon Torres welcomes son

There was another Pittsburgh Pirates birth this week. Their relief pitcher, Salomon Torres, and his wife, Belkis, welcomed their first son into the world on the 18th. Jordan weighed 7 pounds, 8 ounces. Their previous children are two daughters named Ashley and Allison.

(c) Sports Illustrated

What does Jordan mean? As one of the truly unisex names out there, Jordan came from the name of the river flowing between the countries of Jordan and Israel. A biblical name, it is in those waters that Jesus was baptized.

It's another J for the Wilsons

Jack Wilson, of the Pittsburgh Pirates, and his wife, Julie, welcomed their third child into the world today. It is a girl and they chose the name Jersi Grace.

(c) ESPN

Why Jersi Grace? According to Jack:
I got to pick the name because it was a girl. If it had been a boy, my wife would have picked the name. We have all J's in our family, and we are Christians. I found Jersi in a book, and there's a corny baseball connection (to jersey), even though it is spelled in a different way. It's not a household name. I like that.
I'm not sure what being a Christian has to do with it, but the couple already has Jacob and Jaidyn.

So what does Jersi mean? Well, they modified the name Jersey (most notable for New Jersey, USA), which is disputed. It may have come from the German surname Jerzey (which is from the name George and means "farmer") or it may have been English. Who knows? For Jack and Julie, the meaning of a baseball jersey is good enough!

Another Jolie-Pitt on the way?

Rumors are flying about Angelina Jolie. After recent admissions that they both would like to add to their brood, it seems they may already be expecting another addition!

(c) AP

What will they name the newest addition? No one can know for sure, but we sure can guess, can't we? They already have:
  • Maddox Chivan (He was adopted and his name means "fortunate, life")
  • Pax Thien (Also adopted and his name means "peace, heaven")
  • Shiloh Nouvel (Child by birth whose name means "messiah, new")
  • Zahara Marley (Adopted. Her first name means "shine" or "radiate" and her middle name is after Bob Marley)
When they adopt a child, they tend to choose a name that comes from the region of the child's birth (hence Maddox and Pax's middle names). If Angelina is indeed pregnant, they won't have to consider a name from any region. Last time, they chose a French name. There are two consistent factors in all of the names: the Jolie-Pitt's liking of the "different" letters: v, x and z, and that none of the names start with the same letter.

Along those lines, here are some names they might consider for their next child:

  • Javan
  • Lazar
  • Felix (meaning lucky/successful)
  • Tirzah (meaning favourable)
What names do you think they'll choose?

Taylor Hawkins (Foo Fighters) welcomes son

As reported by Sarah at Celebrity Babies, Taylor Hawkins and his wife, Alison, have welcomed baby Oliver Shane into the world. Oliver is the father's first name as well, so it is nice to see a bit of a tradition passed on.

As to it's meaning, Oliver is reported to mean "elf army" from the Germanic name
Alfihar. Shane is derived from Sean, which itself is derived from the name John, which is originally Hebrew and means "Yahweh is gracious."

It leaves us to wonder: Will the baby follow in the tradition set out by his father and be called by his middle name?

Son for Melanie Howard

Australian Prime Minister John Howard became a first-time grandfather Saturday, August 25. His daughter, Melanie, and her husband, Rowan McDonald, welcomed their first child, a healthy baby boy they named Angus Benjamin Howard McDonald.

While the political world is focused on using this to show John Howard is too old to continue in politics, the baby name industry is more interested in why Melanie and Rowan chose the names and what they mean.

Angus is a classic, yet off-beat Scottish and Irish name believed to mean "strong one." It is very fitting for the grandson of a Prime Minister and the son of two lawyers and because it isn't very popular, little Angus will probably be the only one in his classroom with the name.

Benjamin is another classic name, but far more popular. As a first name, this would be far from unique, but adds a note of familiarity when used as a middle name. Benjamin also has Biblical roots. It is from the Hebrew name "Binyamin," which means "son of the south." Yet another name fitting for this child born "down under."
Overall, professional baby name consultants are impressed with the name Melanie and Rowan chose for their first child. The community cannot wait to see what names they might choose in the future.
